Following the release of fourth album Piramida, Efterklang add another string to their bow with The Ghost Of Piramida, a film by Danish director Andreas Koefoed, that documents the Danish trio’s visit to the former Russian mining town.
The documentary follows the group as they go on a treasure hunt in the empty buildings of the abandoned town. Narrator and former Piramida-citizen Alexander, takes us back to a bygone era, when Piramida flourished.
The Ghost Of Piramida premieres in November at IDFA in Amsterdam and CPH:DOX in Copenhagen – two of the world’s most renowned documentary film festivals. The film has been nominated in the Best Music Documentary category at both festivals.
Plans for further screenings have yet to be announced. An official Trailer for The Ghost of Piramida will be revealed soon.

Copenhagen group Efterklang return with new album Piramida, out today via 4AD/Remote Control.
Piramida is perhaps the band’s greatest achievement: an album bringing the outside in, informed by frozen time and the relics humanity leaves in its expanding wake.
The making of Piramida started in unusual fashion in August 2011, when the members of Efterklang (Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen and Rasmus Stolberg) went on a nine-day audio expedition to an abandoned Russian settlement in Spitsbergen, an Arctic island located just shy of the North Pole. Spitsbergen is home to more polar bears than people and also to the ghost town of Piramida, which was abandoned overnight in the 90s, and today stands as a slowly decaying ruin.
To get a sense of what happened there, Efterklang have produced a video that gives a tantalising insight into this unique journey – it’s the best way to understand how they obtained over 1,000 sounds to sample for the new album. Along with discovering the world’s northernmost grand piano, the trio spent nine days exploring and recording the sounds that would inspire and build the songs on Piramida. Watch the video below.
In May 2012, Efterklang were invited to perform at the Sydney Opera House, where they premiered the album with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. You can watch a magical performance of album track ‘The Ghost’ watch the video below.
