Sep 23 200 - DJ SOUP TOUR

After being politely booted from the Hurstville Boys High School Band for breaking down into funk-beats during the Theme To Hogan’s Heroes, John Blake AKA {DJ} Soup set off to become a pro basket baller. His quest took him to the likes of China, Lebanon and twice across the USA. During this time, he realised there was more to life than chucking a pig-skin and started pursuing his real love - music.

Soup released the influential album “Souperloops” in 1997 which became feature album all around the country including Triple J and inspired many budding young musicians like the Resin Dogs and Superfluid to take up the art of ‘sampology’. Soups next release was the acclaimed “Sleekism” with infamous Fat Pizza star Sleek the Elite which ingeniously fused beats of both Western and Arabic cultures.

Soup went on to release two more albums – “Eclectro” (1999) and “From Anuva Planet” (2000). This album featured collaborations with the likes of Gift of Gab from Blackalicious and Swollen Members from Canada. The Gab track got remixed by Katalyst and DJ Vadim.

Soup’s latest offering “Beatroot” (The Edible Root Of The Beat) is due out September 11th on Invada Records. It is a freak out of quirky samples and big dope drums. Recorded completely at home in his studio called ‘HEAbdENDERs Retreat’ and inspired by such things as “The Michael Jackson Trial, suicide bombers, the fall of the USSR, conspiracy theories and shapeshifting reptiles the album is an explosion of eclectic aural goodness.

Soup’s music is diverse using recordings from all styles of music and periods. If you are into Buck 65, Quasimoto, Prince Paul and old/new school hip hop with a kink, you should certainly check this one out.
