New music from Deerhunter, Algiers, Josienne Clarke, and more

Algiers will return in 2020 with a new album, There Is No Year (Matador), and have shared a new single ‘Dispossession.’ Those aware of the ideals of this outspoken four-piece will find their latest direction on There Is No Year traversing unprecedented ground. The album solidifies and expands upon the doom-laden soul of their foundation, toward an even vaster, genre-reformatting sound, one somehow suspended in the amber of “a different era,” as described by guitarist Lee Tesche. Preorder the album here.

A separate entity to their eighth studio album Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared? Deerhunter release Timebends.’ A partly improvised stream-of-consciousness outpouring. Recorded live direct to tape and in one take with minimal overdubs and mastered using a completely analogue signal chain.

Check out Josienne Clarke’s new single ‘Slender, Sad & Sentimental.’ It’s another taste off her forthcoming debut solo album In All Weather (Rough Trade), which cuts ties with her folk roots, and embraces a pop sensibility. Josienne: “I approached this song with the weight of my own maudlin inaccessibility in mind. I was writing about writing a catchy single in the style of a catchy single. I’ve possibly hit peak self-reference!” Preorder the album here.

TWINS has released his second LP New Cold Dream out now via 2MR. The creative alter-ego of Atlanta producer Matt Weiner, TWINS is heartfelt dark electro, synth pop, industrial dance music with ‘80s influences comparable to John Maus, Bauhaus, Suicide, and Depeche Mode. Stream it here.

Finally, it’s November 1st which means Christmas decorations go up, and so do Christmas covers. The next in Lucy Dacus‘ holiday series is a Wham! classic. You know what to do.
