THURSTON MOORE & LEE RANALDO AT MELBOURNE FESTIVAL

Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo have been announced as part of the Melbourne Festival 2012 line up.

THURSTON MOORE Thursday 25 Oct 8pm

Touring on the back of his magisterial 2011 solo LP, Demolished Thoughts, this is Thurston Moore as he’s never been before – acoustic and raw, surrounded by harp and violin, singing folk-like songs on fleeting happiness and the steady ebb of time.

This concert is a rare opportunity to hear the new Thurston live: achingly beautiful, yet still crackling with the electric charge and anthemic sprawl that came to define the sound of a generation.

LEE RANALDO Wednesday 24 Oct 8.30pm

More song-oriented than any of Ranaldo’s previous outings, Between the Times and the Tides sees him joining up with Sonic Youth alumni Steve Shelley, Jim O’Rourke and Bob Bert, Wilco axe-man Nels Cline, organist John Medeski, and long-time Text of Light collaborator Alan Licht to dish out a powerful sequence of rock gems – a rollicking constellation of shimmering, 60s-tinged melody and soaring poetry.

Performing solo with his new group in Australia for the first time, Ranaldo brings to bear his three decades of experience to craft a live show that is powerful and ever-changing, oscillating between bracing indie rock, quiet introspection and, of course, the spontaneous guitar-fuzz overloads he’s famous for.

Ranaldo will be supported by up-and-coming Sydney shoegazers, The Laurels. Channeling Velvet Underground-style noise experiments and transcendent guitar freak-outs, their sound is psychedelic, surging and overwhelming, an astral journey contained in a wall of blissful guitar noise.

Hailing from West London and three albums down the line, Mystery Jets have accrued success in abundance with their own quirky pop sound.

Their fourth album ‘Radlands’ saw the band relocate to Austin, Texas for the recording, which and was co-produced by Mystery Jets and Dan Carey (Hot Chip, Franz Ferdinand, Emiliana Torrini).
On the making of Radlands, band member Blaine explains:

“We’ve always wanted to make a record in America and after touring Serotonin the time felt perfect to go and do it. Our first three albums were entirely conceived and recorded in London so going out to Austin felt like the furthest place from everything we knew. We arrived with a handful of songs, but one in particular felt like it captured the spirit of why we had come there. It was called Radlands (a fusion of the 1970s Terrence Malick film ‘Badlands’ and Redlands, Keith Richard’s Sussex estate), which is also what we named our studio; a big old wooden house on the banks of the Colorado river”.
