After a sell-out show at the Sydney Opera House earlier this year, 4AD and Remote Control are excited to formally announce the release of Efterklang’s fourth album Piramida. The album will be released on Friday 21 September 2012.
The making of Piramida started in unusual fashion in August 2011, when the members of Efterklang (Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen and Rasmus Stolberg) went on a nine-day audio expedition to an abandoned Russian settlement in Spitsbergen, an Arctic island located just shy of the North Pole. Spitsbergen is home to more polar bears than people and also to the ghost town of Piramida, which was abandoned overnight in the 90s, and today stands as a slowly decaying ruin.
To get a sense of what happened there, Efterklang have produced a video that gives a tantalising insight into this unique journey – it’s the best way to understand how they obtained over 1,000 sounds to sample for the new album. Along with discovering the world’s northernmost grand piano, the trio spent nine days exploring and recording the sounds that would inspire and build the songs on Piramida. Watch the video below.
In May 2012, Efterklang were invited to perform at the Sydney Opera House, where they premiered the album with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. You can watch a magical performance of album track ‘The Ghost’ below.

Beirut have released the video for the title track from their 2011 album. The video was directed Houmam Abdallah. Zach Condon chatted to Pitchfork about the video:
“I always felt that The Rip Tide wasn’t fully able to project its own ambitions in song form.. no matter how it was performed or recorded, it felt contained by sound alone… I wanted more, as I often do with my music, and this is not a bad thing. Growing to accept a song’s limits is part of the process of creating and loving them. Which was why I was so excited to see what Houmam had dug into when he picked The Rip Tide out of all others for a video. The concept fit, and the product brought the song somewhere that I had only been able to describe to myself, now available for others to see and feel it much more as I had in the process of writing it.”
Beriut will return to Australia later this year for Harvest Festival.

‘Summer Storm’ is the first single from Fox + Sui’s forthcoming EP Taboo, set for release in July 2012 via Two Bright Lakes / Remote Control.
Fox + Sui are Andras Fox and Sui Zhen, two musicians who share a love of early electronic music and the deep sea. Their new single ‘Summer Storm’ is an underwater journey, beggining with the sound of water lapping against the mixing desk. ‘Summer Storm’ is available for free download HERE.
Fox + Sui met in 2010 as participants at the Red Bull Music Academy in London. Respective solo releases in 2012 quietly announced Sui Zhen as a songwriter with a knack for improvisation and experimentation within traditional structures, and Andras Fox as an electronic musician who negotiates a range of moods, tones, instruments and rhythms with finesse.
As a duo Fox + Sui fold together a sophisticated selection of shared influences including James Pants, Antena and Arthur Lyman. They create their own brand of dream pop that toys with traditional pop sensibilities and finds understated revelry in the details. There’s is sound that incorporates the knowing naiveté of folk art and the considered traipse of down-tempo electronica.

Purity Ring have unveiled the new single from their forthcoming debut album. Available to download below, ‘Fineshrine’ is the second song to be taken from their highly anticipated album Shrines, which will be released on 20 July via 4AD/Remote Control.
‘Fineshrine’ might be considered the band’s most anthemic song to date, an impressive feat for those who’ve been paying attention to the band’s output since their inception only a year and a half ago. Megan James’ lyrics are at once grisly and tender, a blood-soaked love song that sits atop Corin Roddick’s mammoth, ear-burrowing production.
