MP3: The MOUNTAIN GOATS – ‘THUCYDIDES II-58′

The Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle was happy about reaching 25,000 Twitter followers and to thank them he released a previously unheard track. He posted an acoustic cut called ‘Thucydides II-58′ and explained, “This song was what we call a ‘false start,’ I had a whole concept for a project I’ll be announcing soon but it went in another direction.”

STREAM ATLAS SOUND’S NEW ALBUM ‘PARALLAX’ IN FULL

Atlas Sound’s brilliant new album Parallax is out today through 4AD / Remote Control and for a limited time you can also stream it in full.

Atlas Sound, the ever expansive solo project from Bradford Cox of Deerhunter, is not a ‘side-project’ but rather a fully fleshed musical landscape, chock-full of pop chronicles culled from sci-fi fever dreams and mid-century rock. Citing the “ideas that I can’t make work with a five piece rock band” as the basis of his solo material, Cox’s work as Atlas Sound represents a feral and prolific musical voice.

With its scorched beauty, stream of consciousness, and wonderfully cohesive pop narrative, Atlas Sound is another outlet for Cox’s relentless creativity, distinctly remaining the product of just one man’s vision. The twelve tracks on Parallax display a clearer refining of Cox’s muse, further marking him out as a definitively singular voice.

Parallax is perhaps Cox’s best work to date, juxtaposing his modern and sometimes avant song-writing sensibilities against a backdrop of ambient loneliness and a quiet feeling of desperation.

OSCAR AND MARTIN NEW SINGLE & ANNOUNCE SUMMER TOUR

Melbourne-based electronica duo Oscar and Martin will play a series of shows and festivals this summer to coincide with the release of new single ‘What I Know‘.

Taken from their acclaimed debut album For You, ‘What I Know’ is a sweet and soulful love song, featuring the heart-melting vocals of Bec Rigby (The Harpoons). For You has received rave reviews for its heavy hitting hip-hop drum patterns, wonky baselines and killer r’n'b hooks, with Oscar and Martin being compared to luminaries like the Avalanches and Architecture in Helsinki.

Oscar and Martin recreate their genre-hopping songs in a live setting using tape loops, drum machines, synthesizers, floor toms and their own idiosyncratic vocal harmonies. Having recently supported Caribou, Four Tet and Coco Rosie, Oscar and Martin can’t wait to share their ingenious wonky pop music with you this summer.
See below for all upcoming tour dates!

ST. VINCENT 4AD SESSION

Earlier this year, St Vincent took a giant leap forward with the release of third album, Strange Mercy. This time out Annie Clark was to combine her long-celebrated musical virtuosity with ambitious songwriting that ran a gamut of emotional cadences, all the while underpinned by a colourful sense of melody.

Recording these songs live for the first time, St Vincent has performed four tracks from Strange Mercy for the tenth visual installment in the 4AD Session series. Shot at Shangri-La Studios in the heart of the Brooklyn film and photography district in Greenpoint, the session was recorded with Annie’s new band, Daniel Mintseris (keys), Toko Yasuda (moog) and Matthew Johnson (drums).

You can check out the entire session below.
