The Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle was happy about reaching 25,000 Twitter followers and to thank them he released a previously unheard track. He posted an acoustic cut called ‘Thucydides II-58′ and explained, “This song was what we call a ‘false start,’ I had a whole concept for a project I’ll be announcing soon but it went in another direction.”

Atlas Sound’s brilliant new album Parallax is out today through 4AD / Remote Control and for a limited time you can also stream it in full.
Atlas Sound, the ever expansive solo project from Bradford Cox of Deerhunter, is not a ‘side-project’ but rather a fully fleshed musical landscape, chock-full of pop chronicles culled from sci-fi fever dreams and mid-century rock. Citing the “ideas that I can’t make work with a five piece rock band” as the basis of his solo material, Cox’s work as Atlas Sound represents a feral and prolific musical voice.
With its scorched beauty, stream of consciousness, and wonderfully cohesive pop narrative, Atlas Sound is another outlet for Cox’s relentless creativity, distinctly remaining the product of just one man’s vision. The twelve tracks on Parallax display a clearer refining of Cox’s muse, further marking him out as a definitively singular voice.
Parallax is perhaps Cox’s best work to date, juxtaposing his modern and sometimes avant song-writing sensibilities against a backdrop of ambient loneliness and a quiet feeling of desperation.
The xx have finally announced that they have started working on their second album via their Facebook page:
“We have started recording our second album! We have also started this blog where we will post our inspirations + pictures + favourite songs. We hope you enjoy it! Lots of Love, The xx”
You can check out the blog and keep up with the progress HERE.
This will be the follow up to their much loved self titled debut in 2009.
Earlier this year, St Vincent took a giant leap forward with the release of third album, Strange Mercy. This time out Annie Clark was to combine her long-celebrated musical virtuosity with ambitious songwriting that ran a gamut of emotional cadences, all the while underpinned by a colourful sense of melody.
Recording these songs live for the first time, St Vincent has performed four tracks from Strange Mercy for the tenth visual installment in the 4AD Session series. Shot at Shangri-La Studios in the heart of the Brooklyn film and photography district in Greenpoint, the session was recorded with Annie’s new band, Daniel Mintseris (keys), Toko Yasuda (moog) and Matthew Johnson (drums).
You can check out the entire session below.
